Race Recap: The Plaza 10K

Saturday, I worked the packet pick up for the Plaza 10k. Saturday, I also fully committed. I was really up in the air about it because of my knees but I couldn't let everyone else have all the fun. I also wanted a really sweet Brooks tech shirt.

Sunday morning, I awoke to pouring rain and excitedly got dressed in head to toe dry fit. I have never raced a 10k before!

It was sooo easy to park, and with 1,600 people I was slightly worried about parking on the plaza. Yeah, it's not Chicago but still 1,600 is a lot for a plaza locale race.

Gun time was 7:30, and it was still spitting rain. I love rain running!! Remember my PR at Rock the Parkway two years ago? Rain and hail.

Within the first half mile I knew I dressed too warm but I didn't want to take off my jacket so I somehow managed to strip off my dry fit shirt.

The course was gorgeous, even in the rain, and incredibly flat. Thhaaaannnnk you!!!

There is something to this 10k thing, after I finished I didn't feel like I wanted to die or kill anybody, but it was a good distance to be proud of.

I took it really easy because my knees literally feel like they are going to snap, and still finished in under an hour. Which was my goal! Win!

Must Be Doing Something Right

Guess what lovies?!  It's my wedding anniversary to the Mr. Man.  THREE WHOLE YEARS! Amazing someone would want to put up with me that long, let alone share a bed and smell my toots at night, am I right?! So happy anniversary to us, we celebrated this weekend and will continue to do so throughout the week.  Because we are party-ers like that, you know.

But before we started out celebration, I took my furry beth frand on a long run.  I am officially going to start following a training plan again, and get my balls back.  So, you will start seeing my long run posts again.  This was going to be my pre-long run, or the PRLRBJGHBB (the pre-long run before julia gets her balls back). By "balls back" I mean the courage to attempt another marathon, since my ego took a major hit in October.

So anyway, tangent, we went to run before we started our anniversary fun.  I decided to go to the old trail since it's better for runs over four miles.  I was met with the most frustrating deluge of traffic due to road construction and it put my about 20 minutes behind schedule.  Those 20 minutes really messed me up.  First of all, I became irrationally angry with traffic.  Second, I knew this would throw off my hydrating schedule since I gulped water before I left.  Third, ARDESJDNG EFFING TRAFFIC!!!

Whatever, we got there.  I was determined to have a positive run.  I told myself in the car, I wanted to just destroy this.  I wanted to be exhausted.  However, that 20 minute difference put is at the hottest point of the day and I kinda started to feel bad keeping G out in the heat that long.  We did 5:1, which turned out pretty well.  I was able to keep my stamina up a lot longer, I didn't feel the normal fatigue that I do in my back mileage.  We stopped frequently to allow for Goliath to cool off in the stream and drink up. I hate to admit but one of the stops was for me, due to those 20 minutes I had to pee like 1 mile into the run.  I was able to ignore until mile 5, I HAD to go.  So I became one with nature, and peed in the woods. This in turn Judge me, I dare you. 

As a reward for the run, I let Goliath play in the fountain.  My reward, however, was watching some amateur LARPers go into battle. I would go into great depth of this hilarity that ensued, but trust me when I tell you these guys were amateurs.  There is a group of people who LARP at a local park, in full costume and they have well developed characters and weaponry.  But these kids, on this day kinda showed up to a park in jeans with things that didn't even resemble weapons.  One kid even had a bouncy ball. You must click that if you don't know what I am saying. Come on, dudes.  Like go big or go home right?  If you're gonna LARP do it correctly, am I right?  Maybe they were practicing? To be fair, one guy did have a tail on and another girl kept saying she was a fairy. My favorite part was when they finally were going to start battle, they all stood in pairs in a swampy field until some rogue knight bellowed FIIIIGGGGHHHHTTT. Then.......nothing happened.  They all just continued to stand there, kinda just looking at each other.  Until finally Mr. Rogue Knight, came yelling out from behind a tree and smacked some kid upside the head with his bouncy ball.  DANGEROUS!

I Came To Move

After my 14 mile split, I felt totally abused. What happens to you personally when your electrolytes get low? I get whacked. I'm moody, my muscles cramp and I feel hungover. I took it light the next few days, went to my Hatha Flow classes and that was about it. I am actively trying to take care of my muscles and joints, as opposed to my normal routine of abuse and neglect.

A month ago, the KC Marathon was the only race I had in view. Honest? I FREAAAKKKEEED me out so I've been avidly signing up for every 5k I can get my hands on. This includes this weekend's Kansas vs Missouri Rivalry Run 5k. It was definitely a cool idea, basically runners from Kansas and Missouri sign up-each runner gives a point to their state, division winners and overall winners get more points for their state. There is a big rivalry between Kansas and Missouri, so it was fun way to put it to a foundation's benefit.

I had an awesome feeling about this race. I'm trying to get more comfortable with this distance because so far I have not lived up to my potential. Dead set on setting a PR, I anxiously drove to the race which was in the Power and Light District of KC. Well guess what? You need to pay to park in the lot next the race, and somebody had no cash. So I frantically drove around downtown trying to find a free spot. Finally, a mile from the start and nine minutes to gun time I parked. I sprinted to the starting line, which I guess was my warm up. Slurped some GU and that old familiar pang in the gut. There was no time, the anthem was being sung so I pushed to the middle of the pack and BAM! Gun time.

I made a rookie mistake of going out to fast from the gun, and within a quarter mile I was tiring out. Before I knew it, I was passing mile one. I peeped down at the 405 and GASP! I ran the first mile in 7:20! Holy Hell! I needed to slow down, and quick-oxymoron huh? Lucky for me, Mile one was at the bottom of a glorious monster of a hill. So clearly no trouble slowing down. Hoo-dogey, we have some hills in Missouri but this one does take the cake-apparently it's the hill that use to weed out people during the KC Marathon, but they have since changed the course.

What goes up must go down, so the downgrade from that scale was a relief and I whirred down it-and by mile two I knew I could pretty much do anything and still set a PR. I took a brief walking break by the water station, and carried on. I'm glad I did because we took a left turn on our last half mile, and DWAM-60degree grade of incline. Who does that?! Who makes the finish on that high of a grade??

Those hill repeats have paid off, and I feel pretty confident saying this but hills are a strength of mine now-I have the butt to prove it. When many of my counterparts were throwing in the towel, I spotted my mom just at the right time-who screamed "HEY GIRL YOU KEEP RUNNING...RUN FASTER!! YOU LOOK GOOD!" God, I love that lady. She's the best.

I finished in 26:30, which is an average pace of 8:33-and sets my 5k PR in a race. Obviously, I can run a lot faster with G-and maybe I'll be able to set a new PR at the Strut your Mut 5k in September. No division win for me, I wasn't even in the top 10-depressing for a PR, but it's all good. Here are my STATS:

Been Through the Pain

Balls! Ya'll, I don't know if you know this or not, it's hotttt. I don't know if you know this either, but I don't like to get up early, something you probably could have extrapolated from my lazy blogginess and my lack early runs. Therefore, heat + not-so-early bird makes for a runner that's forced to pick what circumstance they'd prefer.

Sunday, I had intended on running at 6:30am with a group for a six miler. Perfect. I committed to being there. It was early, so it beat the heat and they were meeting on a trail I frequent. WRONG. My abhorrence for waking up any earlier than what my body thinks is totally necessary beat out running in the heat.

So I slept past 10am, and begrudgingly awoke to a whiny antsy dog. I farted around for about an hour, flirting with the idea of a run or completely blowing it off. Before I knew it, 11am rolled around and I had accomplished nothing so I laced up the lunars. It was 90ish outside, so I went to leave without G. As I stepped out the door, the slightest cry escaped his jowls. I looked back only to see his little boxer head cocked, his eyes glistening and a look that absolutely slayed me. How could you? Well I couldn't.

Spare the lecture, we stopped every five to ten minutes for water and to cool down. With the heat index being well over 100, I knew it could be dangerous for him to be out running so I did my best to keep him hydrated, cooled down and we took it slow. We stopped at our swimming spot, then again under the 2 mile bridge, at two drinking fountains and then finally at a water fountain.

All in all, it was a wonderful run. I didn't feel too overheated, but all this water I found myself with the biggest urge to pee at the split. Typically, I can hold it or manage but not this time. I panicked, found a secluded tree and um, relieved myself. Goliath just stood there, cocked his head like before, I usually hike a leg-but that works too I guess.
